Obviously Canada has a better health policy for mothers. It's too bad for both mother and child physically and emotionally because the mothers have the return to work before they feel ready to leave their children too young at home. I hope that in the future, the awareness about this issue will be spread out in public more so that the government will do something to better the situation. Even then, I didn't realize that other countries handled the issue so differently than the US. It wasn't until after I had my child, until after I understood the importance of bonding and breastfeeding and parenting, that I understood how important maternity and paternity leave is.

I've followed the issue in the years since, and have become well-aware that other countries have much better policies than those here in the US. But even at that, I was flabbergasted to read how much time you got off -- with job protection! with almost a full salary!-- 26 years ago. We are 26 years into the future and there is more evidence than ever before about the importance of those early days and months and years, and we here in the US still have to fight against a society that doesn't value parents caring for their kids.

Thanks for writing such an important piece.
