Personally, I wouldn't have artificial nails because of the risk of infection (I've known about that for years). I'm lucky I can grow long nails if I want (I seldom do), but even if I couldn't, I wouldn't go the artificial route. I have toenail fungus on a toe that I wish I'd never developed (it's almost impossible to get rid of).
